Did you know that African Americans have the highest infant mortality rate in the United States? Additionally, were you aware that African American mothers are two to three times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications than white women. This training will bring awareness to the racial disparities impacting black maternal and infant health. It will explore maternal and infant mortality rates, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADS), and other negative health outcomes for black birthing persons.

This workshop will offer a foundation perspective on how development occurs in neighborhoods within the City of Pittsburgh.  It will also detail how residents and organizations can work both with and against the system to ensure communities are places that protect the vulnerable while providing opportunity for growth. **This course includes a walking tour of Homewood, so please wear comfortable shoes and clothes and be prepared for a rain or shine walk.**

Faced with new and unique challenges for social work professionals brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial/social justice crises in our country, NASW has    revised the NASW Code of Ethics to address the real time needs of the social work profession. This presentation will review those amendments to the document approved on 11.06.2020 and 02.19.2021 and how they inform social work practice.  Self-care and cultural competence, the two areas of focus in the document revisions, will be further considered.

In this workshop, the facilitators invite therapists to understand how this process of attempting to keep self out of the room actually invites self in even more. This workshop seeks to create a space where therapists can understand the importance of self-work for not only their therapeutic work but for themselves.

This course will distinguish toxic versus healthy aspects of shame and guilt. It will explore the roots of shame arising from primary relationships in preschool years, as well as relationships with peers during school age and young adulthood. This course will discuss techniques for reducing shame and increasing healthy pride around clients’ views of their own bodies.
