When persons with mental health or substance use disorders present in general health care and other community settings, they are often met with preconceived and stigmatizing interactions with front-line staff. This program will focus on the assessment and intervention of suicidal thoughts in young adults. The first hour will cover methods of assessment, focusing on specific questions to ask and understanding barriers to reporting suicidal thoughts. We will discuss cultural influences on reporting suicidal thoughts and how to address them. The second hour will focus on the resulting interventions, including safety planning, involving family and other supports, and means restriction. We will discuss the critical importance of developing an onsite consultation team when treating suicidal teens.

The social work landscape is changing. We have more information at our fingertips than ever before. Telehealth technologies are being successfully utilized to broaden the reach of many practices. It is important for Social Workers to understand these services in a way that they can explain to consumers. As of January 1, 2018 NASW made significant changes to the Code of Ethics, many of which focus around technology. The updated Code encourages Social Workers to be thoughtful of the impact of technology on everyday practice and to adjust policies and procedures accordingly.
