This lecture will share best practices for engaging communities with a local-to-global lens that strives to eliminate barriers and ensure frontline communities impacted by climate change are able to access needed resources. Learn how to make a difference from a social work perspective in the fight for climate justice and help create a more equitable future for all.

Regardt (Reggie) Ferreira, Ph.D., is the Director of Tulane University’s Disaster Resilience Leadership Academy, Executive Director of the Consortium for Equitable Disaster Resilience, and Associate Professor of Social Work at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. He received his undergraduate degree (BSW) in Social Work and master’s degree in Disaster Risk Management (cum laude) at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa, and his Ph.D. in Social Work (Dean citation) from the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky. He joined the Tulane University faculty in 2013, where he divides his time among administration, applied and community-based research and engagement, program development, and teaching activities. Currently, he is the Chief Editor for the prestigious American Psychological Association’s Traumatology journal (3.2 impact factor), focused on resilience practices amongst traumatized individuals, families, and communities. He has served on several national advisory committees, including those for the National Academies of Science, FEMA, and the American Red Cross.

His main research interest is at the intersection of disaster, climate change, resilience, and behavioral health, with work conducted in Europe, Africa, North America, the Caribbean, and South Asia. Over the past two decades, he has been involved with several efforts focused on disaster risk reduction and fostering resilience, with projects totaling over $43 million in federal and foundation funding. His interdisciplinary work includes over 100 published journal articles, chapters, and scientific abstracts on a variety of resilience, climate change, equity and trauma topics. Dr. Ferreira’s work in the classroom has been recognized with several top teaching awards for his innovative and engaging approaches to teaching. His program development work includes assisting with the development and launch of the Tulane Doctor of Social Work, and he was the architect behind the launch of the on-ground and online versions of the Tulane MS-Disaster Resilience Leadership program and Dual MSW program. His work has most recently been featured in popular media outlets such as CNN, Rolling Stone, Voice of America, HBO/VICE, The Atlantic, Fox, Fox News, NBC, NBC News, CBS, ABC, Reuters, Medscape, NPR, Futurity, ScienceDaily, USA Today, Inside Climate News, and Psychology Today. Reggie loves the outdoors and is originally from Bloemfontein, South Africa.
