Requirements

Admission to the Social Work Major Requires a Student To:

  • Complete 60 transferable credits from an undergraduate institution and/or an associate degree program.
  • Demonstrate the capacity for successful work at the undergraduate level, with a minimum 2.50 GPA on a 4.00 scale (students with a GPA below 2.50 may apply to be considered for admission on provisional status). Credits awarded from the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) by the College of General Studies are acceptable for inclusion in the 60 credits.

*A minimum of 120 credits is required for graduation from the BASW major. To graduate from the BASW Program, the following are required:

  • Complete the general education requirements—36 credits.*
  • Africana Studies (3 crs.)**
  • Anthropology (3 crs.)**
  • Economics (3 crs.)
  • English Composition (3 crs.)
  • Human Biology (3 crs.)
  • Political Science (3 crs.)**

  • Students are able to select from the following areas of concentration:
  • Africana Studies**
  • Anthropology**

  • Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies** (Any course with a GSWS class attribute)
  • Global Studies** (Any course with a Global Studies class attribute)
  • Political Science**
  • Psychology**
  • Sociology**
  • Urban Studies** (Any course with an Urban Studies class attribute)
  • Successfully complete all 48 credits of required BASW social work courses, including field practicum and a 3 credit social work elective.

*Some or all of the above courses may have been taken as part of the 60 credits required for admission.

**Some courses in this subject area may satisfy more than one requirement.

Minor Requirements

Undergraduates throughout the university are able to complete a Social Work minor. In order to do so they must:

  1. Register with the BASW Student Services Specialist Mary Pat Elhattab who will certify that they are completing the social work minor.
  2. Complete (with a grade of C- or better) 12 credits from the following courses, but must include SOCWRK 1000: Introduction to Social Work.

SOCWRK 1000: Introduction to Social Work (required for all subsequent courses with the exception of SOCWRK 1005)

SOCWRK 1005: Foundations of the Welfare State

SOCWRK 1006: Policy Analysis

SOCWRK 1035: Global Perspectives in Social Work

SOCWRK 1040 Poverty and Income Inequality: Social Responses

SOCWRK 1058: Economics and Social Work

SOCWRK 1079: Child Welfare Services

SOCWRK 1088: Special Topics (1-3 credits)
