Continuing Education: The Relationship Between ADHD and Gambling Addiction

November 1, 2019 - 9:00am to 4:00pm

This workshop will explore ADHD & Gambling symptoms, and the relationship between them. Participants will learn how to effectively screen, assess, and intervene each disorder when they present together in therapy. Learn how to determine which disorder may be primary and what to do next for the most effective client centered care. Discussions will include both non-medication interventions and when medications are most helpful for clients. With research supporting as high as 20% of individuals with a gambling disorder also meet criteria for ADHD, all clinicians should become more informed.

Continuing Education: Social Work Ethics Update

November 2, 2019 - 9:00am to 12:00pm

Licensed Social Workers and Licensed Clinical Social Workers in Pennsylvania are required to complete at least three hours of continuing education on ethics content each license renewal period as part of their 30 hours of continuing education. This workshop is am opportunity this licensing period to address this requirement.

Continuing Education: Working with Clinicians Who have Lost Clients to Suicide

Clinicians who experience a loss of a client or loved one to suicide may go thru isolation, may have fear of judgment or negative reactions, and may struggle with shame as well as grief and traumatic stress. The statistics are staggering: 1) There is one death by suicide in the US every 12 minutes. (CDC) 2) Suicide takes the lives of over 44,965 Americans every year. (CDC) 3) Only half of all Americans experiencing an episode of major depression receive treatment. (NAMI) 4) An estimated quarter million people each year become suicide survivors (AAS).  This workshop delves into the fragile relationships we as clinicians hold with our clients and explores the topic of suicide of a client in treatment. And the loss of a loved one and the impact on our practice and our professional life as clinicians. The presentation will be enhanced with interactive experientials, hands-on learning tools, small break-out groups, worksheets and videos.

Continuing Education: Working with Veterans & their Families

November 15, 2019 - 9:00am to 4:00pm

Social workers and other helping professionals in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region are sure to work with many active military, veterans, and their families, as this region continues to have one of the largest veteran populations in the country. Hence, we need to better understanding the cultural context, military experiences, and veteran issues and resources of and for this population and their families, including issues of suicide, post-traumatic stress, military sexual trauma, and other challenges that veterans face.
