Ethics and Technology
Training Description
The social work landscape is changing. We have more information at our fingertips than ever before. Telehealth technologies are being successfully utilized to broaden the reach of many practices. It is important for Social Workers to understand these services in a way that they can explain to consumers. Learn about the 2018 changes NASW made to the Code of Ethics, many of which focus on technology. During this workshop we will take an entry-level look at these changes to help participants understand the updates and how they have the potential to impact practice. This training will count for 1 hour of Ethics related instruction.
Training Objectives
Through this workshop participants will:
- Gain a base understanding of basic telehealth technologies available to practice social work
- Understand telemental health terminology
- Understand how to maintain ethical boundaries when utilizing technology in practice
- Understand NASW guidelines on ethical practices for use of technology with tele-therapy including which platforms can be used, and considerations for risks/benefits of tele-therapy
Presenter
Alicia Melnick, LCSW earned an MSW and a certificate in Gerontology from the University of Pittsburgh in 2009 and a BA in Psychology with minors in Sociology and Theater from Mount Union College in 2006. During her time at Pitt she was a fellow in the second graduating cohort of the Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education. Prior to working at the University of Pittsburgh she was the Social Work Supervisor at UPMC Passavant Hospital. While at UPMC Passavant in addition to her management responsibilities she also worked clinically in the ICU setting and helped to develop an internal Crisis Incident and Stress Management (CISM) team. Prior to that position she worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker with Western Psychiatrist Institute and Clinic of UPMC on the Integrated Health and Aging Unit. Ms. Melnick has served as a Field Instructor for the School of Social Work since 2012. Ms. Melnick holds a clinical social work license in Pennsylvania. Ms. Melnick is the Program Administrator for the Community Engagement Fellowship and Field Coordinator for the Expect Respect Fellowship. She works with students who from the both DP and COSA track.
