Every year, thousands of troops leave active duty service and become military veterans within their communities. The demands of military service, including the trauma of combat, may contribute to substance use among veterans. Service members have an increased risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD), especially those who have been deployed to combat. Veterans deserve to receive high-quality and strengths-based care. Part of honoring veterans is recognizing their strengths and struggles that affect both the individual and their families.
In this program, practitioners will learn:
- the impact of military experience and culture on veterans’ service needs across the life course.
- ways to engage Veterans and their families in high-quality care.
- difficulties that may interfere with Veterans’ adjustment to reintegration back into civilian life.
- trends in substance use disorders and PTSD in veterans.
- Veteran-specific mental health risk and addiction risk factors.
- assessing and engaging veterans with PTSD and substance use disorders.
- the triggers unique to military personnel and combat veterans that may impact care
