Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week: Serwaa S. Omowale

Serwaa S. Omowale

Serwaa S. Omowale, LMSW is a joint Ph.D. Social Work/MPH candidate at the University of Pittsburgh. Currently, she is a Research Assistant for the Postpartum Mothers Mobile Study.

Serwaa’s research is focused on improving maternal health and birth outcomes among Black women, with a particular interest in these health outcomes among college-educated Black women. Moreover, she is interested in how work-related stress and discrimination impacts racial disparities in adverse birth outcomes.

Presently, Serwaa is a recipient of a NIH, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute research supplement which supports her dissertation project examining the effects of work-related stress and discrimination on racial disparities in small-for-gestational age births. She is also the principal investigator of the Black Women’s Work and Maternal Health Research Project, which explores how workplace factors influence the maternal health of college-educated Black women through in-depth, in-person interviews.

What advice would Serwaa give future graduate and professional students?: "When you consider doctoral studies, make sure you thoroughly research programs and reach out to potential advisors/mentors early. Also, make sure the program is a good fit for you before you accept an admission offer."
