Alumnus wins award

Johannes John-Langba

Alumnus Johannes John-Langba, PhD ('04), MPH ('04), MSW, has been chosen by the Howard University School of Social Work as the 2019 recipient of the Inabel Burns Lindsay Social Work Education Leadership Award (Dr. Lindsay was the first African American Woman to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work doctoral program). Dr. John-Langba is the 8th recipient of this award that honors Howard University social work graduates who exemplify the educational leadership of their founding dean. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Howard University, Dr. Lindsay emphasized in a June 10, 1967 centennial address the importance of social work addressing difficult issues through critical examination and evaluation and movement away from "mending operations." She stated that "the process may be uncomfortable, disillusioning and at times probably disheartening. But if social work is to realize its unlimited potential, the challenge of the future must be accepted."  Over fifty years later, her words still hold true. Dr. John-Langba will  attend the recognition ceremony during the Howard University's Commencement this month.
