Movie Screening & Discussion with Director: From Sea to Shining Sea: Katharine Lee Bates and the Story of “America the Beautiful."

October 8, 2025

5:30-7pm

2017 Cathedral of Learning

"America the Beautiful” may be America’s most beloved song. But few know about the fascinating life of the writer behind it. This film explores the rich life of poet, professor, and social reformer Katharine Lee Bates, author of “America the Beautiful.” As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Bates’ story reminds us of the beauty and ideals of our nation as well as its shortcomings, and honors the unbroken chain of Americans striving to live up to those ideals.

Please join us for a screening and discussion with the film’s writer and director, John de Graaf. John is an author, filmmaker, and activist with a mission to help create a happy, healthy, and sustainable quality of life for America. His previous books and films include Affluenza, What’s the Economy For Anyway?, The Motherhood Manifesto, and Take Back Your Time. The ways he integrates inquiry and activism have great relevance for the better world we are working to create, and this event promises to provide an opportunity for reflection on our history and future-oriented action.
