Max J. Vicente

Max J. Vicente received their BASW from Millersville University and their MSW from the University of Pittsburgh. Max describes their MSW COSA-track experience at Pitt to be overwhelmingly positive and unexpectedly transformative. Max’s research focus is examining the criminal injustice system, U.S. decarceration policy and identifying alternatives to incarceration to improve outcomes for the individuals involved and their families. Rather than the current emphasis on punishment, Max believes the criminal justice system should be reduced or eliminated, and the funds redirected to support overpoliced communities. Max used their social work lens and skills to assist other residents with preparing legal motions, GED tutoring and socio-political organizing strategies during their brief prison sentence at a Federal facility. As someone who identifies as queer, transgender, Latinx and justice involved, Max brings an impactful perspective to their future research and teaching.
