Message to All Students in Field March 20, 2020

TO:              All Students in Field

CC:             Field Instructors and Field Liaisons

FROM:        John Dalessandro, Director of Field Education
DATE:         March 20, 2020

SUBJECT:  Field Education Update

Because of federal, state, and local government calls for social distancing to attempt to stem the transmissions of COVID19 cases we have determined students who have completed their field work (minimum hours completed as outlined in previous e-mails) have fulfilled their field placement requirements for this semester. If students wish to physically return to their field sites, you would be doing so outside of the School of Social Work and would need to negotiate this with your agency as a volunteer activity. You would not be supervised through the School of Social Work or covered by the University malpractice policy.

Regarding termination, we ask:

You terminate with your agency in a professional manner.

Thank your field instructors and task supervisors for their work with you.
Work with your field instructors and task supervisors to professionally terminate with your clients, stakeholders, etc.
Some guidance on professional termination can be found at https://www.socialwork.pitt.edu/academics/field-education

A PDF is available for download at the top of the page.

Work with them and your faculty field liaison to set up the remote field evaluation visit.
Work to complete your field evaluation form which includes your timesheet. This will be forthcoming (Monday).

Students who have not reached the minimum required hours or are part-time:

You will need to speak to your faculty field liaison (MSW) or practicum lab instructor (BASW) to discuss ways in which you may be able to complete your hours in a remote fashion.

Thank you for your continued commitment to field. If you have any urgent questions or concerns, please contact me directly at dalessan@pitt.edu.
