In Their Own Words: Mental Health and Student Academic Success

April 21, 2021 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm

Join Pitt undergrad and grad students, including doctoral student Ana Flores, for a new installment of the Teaching Center’s Understanding Our Students series. In this virtual panel we will hear students’ own voices in a conversation about how their instructors and mentors can support their well-being in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an earlier installment, instructors and mental health professionals shared with us their research-based strategies for creating caring educational environments. Now, we will hear students’ own experiences and insights about what worked for them as they aimed to enhance (and sometimes restore) connection, belonging, transparency, flexibility, and empowerment in their interactions with their teachers and classmates while learning remotely.

By the end of this panel, participants will be able to:

  • Describe, from a students’ perspective, the impact of their own well-being to their academic engagement, persistence, and performance
  • Obtain concrete, student-centered approaches to help students thrive academically
  • Develop strategies to support student well-being as a key component of an inclusive and equitable educational experience
