Abstract: Anthropologist Gabby Yearwood will discuss his research and insights regarding sports and mental health in conversation with Bridget Keown and Sports Medicine and Sports Science students and faculty. Yearwood is interested in how participation in sports shapes not only participants’ bodies, but their mental health, identities, and sense of belonging. He is also interested in the role played by spectators in athletes’ development of self and social identity, and how sports shape society’s ideas about mental health and what is “normal.” Some of Yearwood’s ideas about how playing sports is a creative activity that can contribute to mental health were prompted by consideration of the virtual art exhibition—Experience, Integration, Expression: The Work of Norman Klenicki.
