The Sisterfriend Story, Advocating for Menstrual Equity. Tamara L. Abney

Sisterfriend, Inc. Is Pittsburgh’s only 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to sustaining menstrual health by providing homeless and underprivileged populations with menstrual hygiene products.
People living in poverty typically know where to find a safe place to sleep or a hot meal to eat. But when it comes to taking care of their menstrual hygiene needs, they often have nowhere to turn.
Tampons and sanitary pads usually top the list of needs at shelters, since they’re pricey and supporters don’t often donate them. That is where Sisterfriend comes in. We provide our shelter and school partners with the menstrual care products they desperately need.
Founder Tamara l. Abney saw a need to uplift those living in poverty at the most basic but essential level. She envisioned an organization that would help to sustain menstrual health despite one’s social- economic status. After gathering friends to support her efforts Sisterfriend was formed may 2015.
