A Manifesto for Care and Liberation (tentative title)

Sophie Lewis, PhD

Brooklyn Institute for Social Research

Abstract: Theorist, critic, and translator Sophie Lewis, author of Full Surrogacy Now (Verso, 2021) will examine the ways in which the concept of the "nuclear family" reproduces notions of race, class, and gender in way that perpetuates harm. Through an examination of the long history of family abolitionists, queer Marxists, and gay liberationists, Lewis argues for a hopeful future where care comes not within discrete private units, but instead through larger networks capable of offering the support and love necessary for everyone to heal and to thrive.
