Certificate Programs and Training Series

The Continuing Education Program offers and supports Post-Graduate Certificate Programs, Specialization Training Certificates, and Training Series.

The Social Work Code of Ethics requires continuing education as part of lifelong professional development for social workers. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Council on Social Work Education—which accredits the School of Social Work—both prioritize continuing education. Most states that license social workers require continuing education for license renewal. Currently, the Pennsylvania Board of Social Work, Professional Counseling, and Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners requires 30 hours of social work continuing education for the biennial LSW or LCSW renewal—the current two-year licensing period began March 1, 2019 and will end February 28, 2021.  The University of Pittsburgh and its School of Social Work have also made continuing education a strategic priority.  To learn more about social work licensing and biennial continuing education requirements, visit the Pennsylvania Board of Examiners website.   • The 2-Day Clinical Supervision Training will be re-scheduled to March 27 & 28, 2020


  • The School of Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh through its Child Welfare Resource Center and Continuing Education Program offers Act 31 On-line Training. Please refer any questions regarding the on-line training to the PA Child Welfare Resource Center.  Technical assistance may be requested by e-mailing HelpCPSL@pitt.edu or calling 717-795-9048. NOTE TO PHARMACISTS taking our PA-Approved Act 31 Child Abuse Recognition and Report online training course: Because the child abuse continuing education is Board-approved, not ACPE-approved, information on the completion of the child abuse program is not imported into the CPE Monitor.  Rather, the Board of Pharmacy will electronically receive notice of the completion of the child abuse continuing education directly from the Board-approved child abuse program provider.  The information will be recorded in your pharmacist license record rather than the CPE Monitor.

  • Graduate Certificate in Gerontology:  Already have your social work degree and find yourself working with older adults? Or do you want to position yourself to work with older adults in the future without pursuing a new degree?  The university has a multidisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Gerontology with both in-person and on-line learning opportunities. Learn more about this certificate >

Note: In the wake of Pennsylvania’s professional licensing and other national certification, the School has discontinued its Post-Masters Family Therapy (refer to the PA Board of Examiners for Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists - LMFT) and Employee Assistance (see CEAP: www.eapassn.org) Certificate Programs. The School is working on development of Advanced Clinical Practice courses and institute in these areas to help professional prepare for certification, as well as new areas of Clinical Supervision and Care Management.
