Many MSWs often find themselves moving up quickly into supervisor, management, and even executive positions. The generalist perspective and systems knowledge from their social work education provides a strong basis for leadership growth in a range of social work settings. However, to better prepare COSA/macro practice students to take advantage of leadership opportunities and enhance their personal and professional development, the School offers the Human Services Management Certificate in collaboration with the Network of Social Work Management (NSWM) under a university partnership initiative.
SWCOSA 2084: Human Services Management
SWCOSA 2088: Community Organizing and Planning
In addition to the two required courses, students pursuing the HSM Certificate must complete the following two COSA skill electives.
SWCOSA 2086: Human Resources, Supervision, and Financial Management
SWCOSA 2040: Grant and Proposal Writing
Some joint degree students may fulfill one of the two skills elective courses for this certificate through a required degree course from the other degree program with approval from the COSA Chair. However, all COSA students must still complete two SWCOSA skill electives in Social Work.
Human Service Management Certificate students must have their specialization field placement (12 credit hours – 720 clock hours) in a community-based or human services organization. This may be a private nonprofit organization or a public/government organization.
