School of Social Work

Aging Initiatives & Programs

For many years, the School of Social Work at the University of Pittsburgh has been committed to developing professionals who serve our aging population. The University's location in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, provides a rich environment for learning about older adults and their needs. Allegheny County is one of the oldest counties in the United States and has over 200 organizations and agencies which provide services to older adults. The school's efforts began almost 30 years ago with the Master's Certificate in Gerontology. Over the past six years, those efforts have expanded to include the Hartford Partnership Program for Aging Education, a fellowship program for both master's and Bachelor's students, as well as infusion of geriatric content into foundation and generalist courses. The number of faculty researching and teaching gerontology has also increased in recent years.
