Biography

Dr. Mann, Ph.D., M.S., M.S.W., B.A., has devoted his professional career in tertiary education to developing highly-skilled social work practitioners, community organizer, and social policy analysts at the undergraduate, master’s and doctoral levels. For nine years at the University of Akron and twenty-two years at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Mann has made major contributions to university policies and programs locally and nationally.

Dr. Mann brings innovative strategies and techniques to his work with students. As Associate Professor, and formerly as Baccalaureate Program Director, he guides student development of the knowledge, values, and skills bases of professional social work practice. Among his courses are Introduction to Social Work, Social Work with Groups, Social Policy Analysis, Practicum Seminar and Lab I and II, Social Work Health Services, and, at the Ph.D. level, Social Welfare Policy Analysis course.

Prior to his current work in academia, Dr. Mann served as Western regional Chief Program Analyst IV for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Governor’s Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse. He was the Director of Social and Rehabilitative Services with The Pittsburgh Black Action-Second Step Program and worked with Allegheny County Model Cities and Community Action Pittsburgh. His earliest work was with the Y.M.C.A. in Hamilton County in Ohio as Inner-City Youth Director.

Dr. Mann’s international experiences include service as Consultant to the Department of Social Work, University of the North, Pieterburg, South Africa, and Consultant to the Community College of Alleghen6y County’s Roberto Clemente Health Project in La Reforma, Nicaragua.
