CRSP Offers $500 Award for Best Student Papers on Race

The Center on Race and Social Problems (CRSP), located in the School of Social Work, gives annual awards of $500 to University of Pittsburgh students who write outstanding papers on contemporary race-related issues. Awards are given at the undergraduate, master’s and PhD levels.   In this university-wide competition, CRSP is soliciting papers in the following seven areas: (a) economic disparities, (b) education disparities, (c) intergroup race relations, (d) youth, families, and the elderly, (e) mental health, (f) criminal justice and (g) health.   Papers must meet the following criteria to be considered for review:     The paper must have been submitted for a course (including independent study) during Summer 2013, Fall 2013 or Spring 2014.  The paper should be 10-30 pages, double-spaced.  A student or faculty member can submit student papers.  Each student can submit more than one paper.  Although faculty advising is permitted, the work presented in the paper must be the student's (or student team's) own work. The work presented in the paper must not have been previously published.   Evaluation Criteria  Papers should address contemporary race-related social problems and will be evaluated on originality, analytic quality, clarity, and relevance to current racial issues.   Submission Instructions  Papers must be submitted by Thursday May 15, 2014. Submit papers in MS Word to Laura Krizner at lek83@pitt.edu as an attachment to an email with a subject line reading “Paper Award Submission.”  The cover page should include:   1. Title of paper, name of course and term for which it was written. 2. Student's name, degree program, postal and email addresses, and telephone number. 3.
