Ray Webb
On Wednesday March 29, 2006, the work we do lost a champion and each of us a friend. Those who had the good fortune to know and more importantly be influenced by Ray Webb (MSW ’63) share a common sense of loss which, thanks to his unique character, bonds us to each other through his friendship and memory.
Ray’s life was substantially about the profession of Social Work as it applied to public welfare and behavioral health. With this fundamental and guiding truth, those closest to Ray are working with the School of Social Work to memorialize him with an enduring recognition through financial assistance to those young people seeking to enter the profession whose means might otherwise obstruct access. The Raymond R. Webb Jr. Endowed Fund will provide financial support for graduate students. Selection of scholarship recipients will be based upon a review of students who are pursuing careers in the Public Welfare system and have a financial need. Also, the fund will support an annual Public Welfare lecture and reception to be known as the Raymond R. Webb Jr. Lecture to celebrate Ray’s memory and contribution.
The desire of many to assure Webb’s legacy has been met with great success! A $350,000 goal has been set for the Raymond R. Webb Jr. Endowed Fund. As of today, $170,000 has been raised!
The first Raymond R. Webb Jr. Endowed Fund lecture, “Public Sector Behavioral Health Services in Pennsylvania: A Transformational Agenda,” was held on September 19, 2007, and featured Deputy Secretary Joan L. Erney of the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare and Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
