Continuing Education

The Social Work Code of Ethics requires continuing education as part of lifelong professional development for social workers. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Council on Social Work Education—which accredits the School of Social Work—both prioritize continuing education. Most states that license social workers require continuing education for license renewal. Currently, the Pennsylvania Board of Social Work, Professional Counseling, and Marriage and Family Therapy Examiners requires 30 hours of social work continuing education for the biennial LSW or LCSW renewal—the current two-year licensing period began March 1, 2007 and will end February 28, 2009.  The University of Pittsburgh and its School of Social Work have also made continuing education a strategic priority.  To learn more about social work licensing and biennial continuing education requirements, visit the Pennsylvania Board of Examiners website.
