Direct Practice Specializations

Direct practice specializations entail a specific "package" of courses and field placement experiences that permit students to tailor their education and professional preparation. MSW students are not required to specialize, but those who choose to do so must declare their specialization no later than the end of the first term of full-time study.

Direct practice students in the MSW program can elect to specialize in one of three practice areas:

  • children, youth, and families;
  • health; or
  • mental health.
Students should be aware that not all specialization courses may be available every semester or during evening hours. Students who decide not to complete all of the specific courses for a specialization are not penalized. More information on the specific requirements for these specializations is available in the Student Handbook (PDF); in specific instances, specialization requirements can be modified by the faculty member overseeing the area and/or the MSW Program Director to meet an individual student's learning needs based on a review of their prior academic preparation.
