Direct Practice Certificate Programs

Three certificate programs are available to direct practice students. Direct practice students in the MSW
Program can elect to pursue a certificate in:

  • gerontology;
  • home and school visitor/school social worker; or
  • child welfare.

MSW students are not required to pursue a certificate. Students who elect the gerontology or child welfare certificates must declare their choice of a certificate program no later than the end of the first term of full-time study. Those interested in pursuing the home and school visitor certificate must indicate their intention in their application for admission to the MSW Program.

As with the direct practice specializations, the certificate programs involve a specific "package" of courses and field placement experiences that foster greater depth of knowledge and skills in specific areas of advanced social work practice. Students should be aware that all certificate courses may not be available every semester or during evening hours. Students who decide not to complete all of the specific courses for a certificate are not penalized. More information on the specific requirements for these certificate programs is available in the Student Handbook; in specific instances, specialization requirements can be modified by the faculty member overseeing the area and/or the MSW Program Director to meet an individual student's learning needs based on a review of their prior academic preparation.
