BASW Evaluation of the Student
The Practicum Seminar Lab class instructor reviews the Field Evaluation of the Student form with students in the class. Students then take the form to their field placement. After it is completed by the Field Instructor and student, it is to be returned to the course instructor. The first semester evaluation is usually returned by the first week in December and the second semester evaluation is returned by the second week in April; however the deadline date is determined by the Practicum Seminar and Class Instructor.
The BASW Field Practicum Evaluation instrument includes learning objectives and competencies used to assess the generalist focus. These learning objectives and competencies are evaluated separately at the end of each term of field placement. First semester BASW learning objectives and competencies are evaluated in the BASW First Semester Field Evaluation Form. Second Semester BASW learning objectives and competencies are evaluated in the BASW Second Semester Field Evaluation Form. The BASW Field Practicum evaluation of the student consists of rating the learning objectives for each competency on a scale and then rating the overall evaluation of each competency. The field instructor is required to refer to specific learning assignments and assess the strengths of the student in meeting these tasks and commenting on how the student may improve. At the end of the evaluation, the field instructor adds up all the scores for the 10 competencies and computes a final evaluation score. This is then converted into a letter grade.
The evaluation criteria are consistent with the learning objectives and the 10 competencies set forth in the Field Learning Plan. Students are expected to actively participate in the evaluation process.
Field Instructors recommend grades to the Practicum Seminar and Lab Instructor based on the evaluation. A grade cannot be reported to the registrar without the completion of the evaluation and review of the Instructor.
The student will be asked to evaluate the field experience. A newly developed on-line form will be sent to students near the end of their field experience. The completed form is done on-line.
The Field Education Schedule includes important dates during the academic year that students and field instructors need to be aware of.
