Distinguished Alumni Awards
The Distinguished Alumnae(i) Awards Selection Committee at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work is pleased to announce the categories for its awards program:
- Outstanding Contributions to Social Work Education
- Outstanding Contributions/Career in Social Work Practice
Dr. Brian Segal (PhD'71) has been named a 2008 University of Pittsburgh Legacy Laureate.
The *Legacy Laureate* program was developed to recognize alumni for their personal and career achievements, while at the same time providing them with an opportunity to contribute to the success of today’s University of Pittsburgh students. This is the highest honor bestowed upon a Pitt alum. Brian Segal (PhD ’71) has had an amazing career to date:
- Upon his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Segal
began an illustrious career in higher education. - Associate Professor with Florida State University School of
Social Welfare
- joint appointment to the Carleton University School of
Social Work and School of Public Administration
- Director of the Center for Social Welfare Research.
- President and Vice-Chancellor of Ryerson University
- President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guelph.
In 1992, Dr. Segal resigned his appointment at the University of Guelph to join the world of publishing. Dr. Segal has advanced in this field as well and is currently serving as the President and CEO of Rogers Publishing Limited, the largest magazine publisher in Canada with over 70 titles and 40 web properties.
Throughout his career Dr. Segal has held many high-profile directorships, sitting on the boards of IBM, World Trade Americas Group, Union Gas Corporation and the Institute of Canadian Bankers, to name a few. He also served as the Associate Director of Strategic Planning for Department of the Secretary of the State of Canada.
Dr. Segal will be honored during this year’s Homecoming festivities on October 23-24, 2008.
CRSP Researchers Release Report
The Center on Race and Social Problems recently released a new report “Pittsburgh’s Racial Demographics: Differences and Disparities”. Authored by Dean Larry E. Davis, Ralph Bangs and John M. Wallace Jr., it is the most comprehensive study ever done on the quality of life of multiple racial groups in greater Pittsburgh—African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and Whites—and provides a snapshot of the quality of life for Pittsburgh-area residents compared with national quality of life averages.
